Who knows, maybe you’re Salzburg’s next Mozart? But don’t worry, this city has much more to offer than the old classics. If you have the desire to be musical, we certainly have what you are looking for. Here we have offers to learn instruments, make music with others or simply have fun jamming.

Have you always wanted to try out an instrument or take singing lessons, but are on a tight budget? Then teaching practice at the Mozarteum, our wonderful music university, might be perfect for you. But what is it? Teaching practice means that students at the Mozarteum who want to become music teachers later need “guinea pigs” to teach during their studies. You receive very discounted or sometimes even free lessons in exchange for taking part in your teachers’ exams. This means that other students and professors watch your lessons every few weeks. However, this is not about your performance, but about how your teacher teaches you, so don’t worry. Students often find their own students, but there are contact points such as the linked public Facebook group.

Would you like to perform with a real orchestra on the stage of the Großes Festspielhaus? Then this is your chance. The Salzburg Philharmonic Choir, under the direction of Elisabeth Fuchs, works a little differently to other choirs. Here you are not a permanent member, but sign up for individual concert projects and only attend these rehearsals. The program is varied, not only Mahler and Beethoven, but also ABBA or Cuba flair. And the best thing is that you can simply sign up, you don’t have to audition and are still part of a world-class choir. It’s also impressive for your CV, by the way.

Our university choir takes its work seriously. Here you will receive professional instruction and voice training in the individual voice groups. Since October 2022, it has been under the new direction of Alexander Steinbacher. The choir meets every week for rehearsals and you are sure to find other students who are enthusiastic about singing and enjoy taking part. Three concerts are planned per year and the choir is also available for university events. If you are interested, you can get in touch at any time, but the easiest time to join is at the beginning of the semester. As the choir is quite professional, they will ask you if you have any previous musical experience and may ask you to audition. But don’t let this discourage you, that’s exactly what you’re there for, to sing!

Do you already play an instrument and you are interested in the excitement of orchestral life? The university orchestra is a wonderful community of students, lecturers and anyone else who is interested. You can have your participation credited as a free elective if you join at the start of the semester. The conductor is the charismatic Carlos Chamorro. Rehearsals are held weekly and there is at least one concert per semester. As far as the repertoire is concerned, you will find all the wonderful orchestral classics from Mozart to Orff and Grieg.

The Mozarteum offers many musical groups, but this choir is open to all interested parties and rocks the stage with lots of verve and modern songs. Rehearsals take place every week and you can join at any time. If you are interested, please write to the director Elisabeth Wieland for more information. Unfortunately, the choir does not have its own website.

You like singing, but don’t feel ready for the big stage. Then start with your friends and a beer in a small group and the cozy atmosphere of a pub. Some bars in Salzburg offer regular karaoke nights and every student has them firmly in their diary. On Tuesdays you can rock out to Abba at Shamrock and on Thursdays you can belt out Bohemian Rhapsody at O’Mallys. On Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, the motto in the Stage Bar is “the stage is yours”. And if you can’t get enough of the Wiesn hits for the rest of the year, the City Alm is the place to be on Wednesdays.
